1087 The Way Freight is in from Havelock after making its way along the Peterboro Subdivision doing work here and there. Crew will layover at Lambton before heading back next day to their home terminal at Havelock. Like many similar jobs it works 6 days a week in opposite directions with Sunday off. In other words ex Havelock Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Ex Lambton Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. D-10 class engines were particularly suitable for this type of work. The next day 1057 will be dispatched. Both 1057 and 1087 lasted until the end of steam early in 1960. Monday, November 9, 1959.

On the shop track and the end of their day’s work this is where they take their time from plus final inspection time. The Booking Room is upstairs in the Lambton Locomotive Department office building where the engineer will fill out a work report detailing needed maintenance. After which both the engineer and fireman will book off duty in the book provided for this purpose. The bunkhouse is a short walk back along the shop track. It is an old duplex house with its dividing wall partially removed. The tail-end crew will sleep in their van. Monday, November 9, 1959.

[Editors note: This is in fact a different submission than the similar image below despite the similar angle - allowing it due to historical interest] Let's get 2015 off to a good start with some more of Bob Shaw's old photographs from the 1950's when he was a brakeman. <br> Here we see Lambton's only G2 class engine 2664 backing onto its train the Trenton Pickup in Lambton Yard. Ordered around 9:00 A.M. Usually a G1 class engine the 2203 worked this assignment with engineer Alf Moore. 2664 was long dispatched on the Fraxa (frax-ee) Pickup, the afternoon Lambton-Orangeville assignment ordered around 3:00 P.M.

2664 Trenton Pickup, a regular assignment, departs from Lambton Yard eastbound to Trenton doing setoffs and lifts at various locations along the Oshawa Subdivision as far as Trenton a terminal point. The crew will then go off duty and right back on duty for two days pay per roundtrip! No wonder it attracted senior men!

Two youngsters race to get ahead for that all-important shot! 815 and 1057 are switching the consist to marshal equipment for return trip. 136 has already been cutoff to make a brief runpast with just the two wooden coaches at the bottom end of the yard. <br> <br>

NOTE: The actual consist of the train went unrecorded. Does anyone know the car numbers?

815 sits by herself near the shop. This was my favourite engine. I chose it because of its older appearance compared to 1057. The high mounted old-style headlight adds to its good looks. There was another D-10 1087 similar in appearance to 1057 that could have been used. The cut-down tender provided better backup view for the enginemen. It was supposed to be the last engine for that reason. The three engines had to run backing up for 5 miles from Lambton Yard to Union Station. However, by the time I arrived at Lambton roundhouse the power was already together on the outbound shop track and I did not want to disturb things even though I had provided instructions in writing to marshal them 136, 815, 1057. <br> <br> 815 had been the shop boiler at Trenton for the winter and prior to that the yard engine at Peterboro. I wanted to give her one last fling on the mainline. Alas, it was too much for the old girl. At Streetsville she needed water as the tank was down more than half while the smaller (4,000 Gallon) 136 was less than half used. Water was again taken at Inglewood and Cataract. Upon her return to Lambton the boilermakers condemned her boiler as having been badly burned. She was scrapped.

Here she comes! The train is heading through the scenic Forks of Credit area as the engines battle the steepest part of the grade up to Cataract all three are working hard.

Both 815 and 1057 have their safety valves popping as firemen Russ Cook and Don Atkinson have their engines hot to produce all the steam they can for this, the most difficult part of the upgrade climb.

1. Taking water at Inglewood. Water tanks were everywhere along railways. This style of wooden structure was used to protect the tank inside being heated to keep water from freezing. Years after steam ended this tank supplied water to residents of the tiny hamlet of Inglewood too small to even be a village.<br><br>Note: Water tanks in cities and towns were filled from municipal water pipes while other methods were used in smaller communities. Cataract’s tank was filled from a higher level pond while Markdale was filled by a windmill

Men set about cleaning out the clogged smoke box netting. Shovels full of cinders were removed. So severe was this that the bottom of the smoke box door has a noticeable burn attesting to the high heat build-up. Cinders plugging the frontend was said to be common characteristic of small engines such as A class 4-4-0’s and D-4 class 4-6-0’s and could be affected by too heavy a hand on the throttle of a small engine.<br><br>Engineer Charlie Waters looking back towards the camera. Unbolting the smoke box door are: in suit, Nels Perkins, General Locomotive Foreman, Lambton Locomotive Department and in overalls Peter Fairfull fireman on 136.<br><br>I worked for Mr.Perkins and he was fine man unlike many other officials. You didn’t get away with anything. He was the boss and everybody knew it. He just didn’t have to be a SOB. He explained why he had this laid back manner. When he started his father was a locomotive foreman on the Algoma Division and his men all hated him. He made up his mind that when he got to be a locomotive foreman he would treat his men differently.<br><br>Peter Fairfull was a real gentleman, pleasant and easy going. He came to ourf home to ask my permission to fire 136 that trip. I agreed and the North Pool ireman who stood for the run traded off. Many men wanted this run but only 6 were needed and some would not trade off.<br><br>Peter went on to “fame” as regular engineer on the Day Transfer with 8921. I believe it was he who nicknamed that diesel Empress of Agincourt. He retired off the Havelock Budd Car.

A blustery day as the Tripleheader prepares to leave Inglewood. Master Mechanic L.L. O’Brien standing in gangway behind engineer Charlie Waters while other crew members make their way back to board.<br><br>The photographer Bob Shaw was a CPR brakeman who photographed trains years ago. He retired as a conductor working out of Lambton. His main interest was old motorcycles and automobiles. I recall seeing him ride into Lambton yard on an old Indian! Bob had two old wooden box cars in the Here Yard that were full of old car parts! Eventually, he gave them to South Simcoe Railway. Bob is a great guy with a friendly smile! I am in touch with him from time-to-time and see him at the annual CPR pensioner’s dinner in Toronto.

There are not a lot of straight stretches on the Orangeville Subdivision but here is one where the entire train is seen in a straight line.

Side curtains flap in the wind as the Special makes its way past the photographer using a low angle to capture the scene. To the Passenger Department such trains were always called "Special" but to the Operating Department it was "Passenger Extra 136 North" usually written as "psgr" on train orders.

Here the 136 is spotted in a perfect rods-down pose has been turned and coupled to the rear two wooden coaches for a short runby at the bottom of the yard to recreate an old style consist. Looks like Bill Stewart is backing the 1057 in to place to spot it under the chute to coal up. That tank-like structure set on an angle was a modern style small coal tower. It replaced an old wooden structure. <br> <br>
That mark on the bottom of 136’s smokebox was created from being melted by the burned hot cinders that piled up against it. This plugging up was a common thing on light engines but was this was severe and had already been shoveled out in a huge pile at Inglewood when we stopped to take water and stage a short runby. Water had already been taken at Streetsville and would again be taken at Cataract this being all four places on the Orangeville Subdivision that had water tanks. <br> <br>

The tripleheader has arrived at Orangeville; quite late but still hundreds were waiting. A sea of people. Check out those cars! Remember it is 1960. The Chief of Police said there were more people than when the soldiers came home from the War! Seeing the crowd I immediately cancelled a planned runpast for fear of injuries. A brass band greeted the passengers and after a brief ceremony the crew set about turning the train for the return trip. The train was first split to spot the diner at the station (the train arrived one track over) to water it since the hose was not long enough to reach. This delayed remarshalling the train which required moving the baggage car to the other end and the two wooden SUF (Steel Under Frame) coaches to the rear since they could not be marshaled ahead of steel cars. The CPR had wanted to run the engines and baggage car to turn on the wye at Fraxa (and charge more to do so!). They said the turntable was out of order. I didn’t believe that so, I went to Orangeville to prove it was still serviceable. I refused because I did not want to leave people with nothing to look at while this was being done. I won. My train! The engines were turned, coaled and watered one at a time giving the onlookers a free show. <br> <br>

Looking out from the gangway is L. L. O’Brien Master Mechanic London Division a dour looking Official. The Bruce branches were under the jurisdiction of London Division at the time but were later restored to their traditional Bruce Division. Also in the cab besides engineer Charlie Waters and fireman Peter Fairfull was Nels Perkins General Locomotive Foreman Lambton and Dow Alexander Air Brake Instructor. The ancient A1 air brake was what brought him up from the Falls (Smiths Falls). Five men in a tiny cab and only three seats! <br> <br>
This close up look as the engines round a sharp curve shows the simplicity of engine 136 a small 4-4-0 built in 1883 by Rogers Locomotive in Paterson New Jersey. Heavily rebuilt in Angus Shops in 1914 with a superheated boiler and piston valves it had little original content and was in fact newer than the two D10’s built in 1908 and 1912! It retained the Stephenson valve gear still in use on about 5% of the roster in the 1950’s. It definitely did not have any “mod cons” with its Daylight injector, chain operated manual firebox door, “Johnson” bar manual reverser, A1 air brake. A hidden feature is a damper! Never heard of such a thing. Word was sent from the regular man in New Brunswick about this however, it is not known if it was ever passed along to the engine crew. Its original wooden cab was long ago replaced by a steel one off a U3 class 0-6-0 switcher adding to its ungainly appearance along with the high steam dome. One good feature is its melodic whistle, much nicer than the standard CPR whistle which is a little harsh. If you have heard it you will know what I mean. Listen to it on Sentimental Journey “The Last Run” the first Canadian made LP record of railway sounds. A very few original unopened copies are still available! <br> <br>

This photograph of the train running near Cheltenham shows the entire train of three locomotives and 14 cars! A quarter mile long and nearly 1000 tons. The lightweight baggage car with electric generator for tape recorders and gated doorways typical for railfan excursions as well as food and drink supplies for the vendors who went though the cars. Two lightweight air conditioned coaches with reclining seats are next. Two more were substituted for higher seating capacity heavyweight coaches more typical for a train of the steam era. Even more seating would have been of benefit to the hundreds of people turned away. It would however have spoiled the appearance of the train so I stopped there. Two ancient wooden coaches (1595 and 1596) brought up the tailend to represent earlier years. These cars were brought to Toronto from The Glen Yard in Montreal along with a spare protect coach 1583. A dining car was placed in the train to provide full meal service complete with a special souvenir menu. The CPR wanted to add a second dining car to handle the anticipated demand however; they wanted to reduce a coach stating they didn’t feel the engines could not handle 15 cars. I refused because the loss of about 80 tickets would have meant the loss of any profit. This was a very expensive event. Had a third D10 (1087) been used the second diner and perhaps another coach could have been handled however the 136 was already committed to. Besides, it would not have been the big drawing card without the little 4-4-0. <br><br>Note the new white classification flags and white canvas curtains applied to the engines as the CPR went all out dressing up the engines in passenger special trim including white tyres, silver armoured cable to head and class lights as well as builders plates. Red paint inside the bells! Even new bell ropes. Engines and tenders were cleaned and painted, cab interiors painted CPR standard green with red trim. Too much paint in fact. All the valves etc. were freshly repainted black BUT the CPR wanted Passenger Special trim which meant polished brass everywhere! I recall checking on the engines a day or two in advance at Lambton roundhouse where I worked and found a labourer with a big file hand filing the fresh paint off the brass valve nuts! What a job! I quickly left the cab without saying anything before he blamed me!<br><br> Raymond L. Kennedy CPR Retired

Rounding a curve passing tiny Churchville second point north of Streetsville where the Galt Sub. double track mainline was left behind for the single track branchline. The firemen all sitting down at this point but they won't be so comfortable for long! Peter Fairfull with the peak of his cap turned up (normal for Peter!). Crews vied for the run but only Peter came to my home and asked permission to fire 136. On the right hand seatbox is regular North Pool engineer Charlie Waters who would not trade off. Russ Cook is firing 815 and I am in the cab with him and regular North Pool engineer Harry Burke. 1057 is being run by Bill Stewart and the always cheerful Don Atkinson is firing. BTW no room for me in the tiny cab of 136 with THREE officials watching over things!

It is shortly before 10:45 A.M. on a cool, grey day Sunday May 1st.1960. A day that would go down in history. Billed as "An Old Fashioned Springtime Excursion" it would later become known far and wide as the"Tripleheader". The steam era was drawing to a close and railfan clubs were operating excursions, usually with one locomotive and sometimes with two, but never before were three locomotives used! They were required to haul the heavy train up the steep grade between Forks of Credit and Cataract on the way to Orangeville. A record 14 cars and a record passenger count of 1,057 paying passengers. This matched the engine number 1057! Pass holders and small children along with railway personnel brought the total to over 1100. Hundred more were turned away! The engines could haul no more cars so the ticket sales were cut off two weeks in advance also something unheard of.
